Here are the most common dashboard lights to look out for:

car battery

Battery

The two main culprits for this light turning on could be a faulty battery or a faulty alternator. Regardless, if you let this go unchecked, your vehicle could fail to start and leave you stranded.

traction control

Traction Control

This light may come on during something as commonplace as driving on a slippery road. If you notice that it won't turn off, though, take it in to get checked ASAP.

engine oil level

Engine Oil Level

If your car is due for an oil change, this light will activate. The engine oil level light may also turn on because your vehicle's oil pressure is low, which could result in sudden engine failure.

check engine

Check Engine

This one might not be an indicator of anything serious. But if the check engine light is on as well, you should have it examined by a service technician sooner rather than later.

airbag and seatbelt

Airbag and Seatbelt System

This usually relates to the seatbelt sensor, but if a problem with the airbags is the cause they may not be deployed in the event of a collision.

TPMS

Tire Pressure Warning

Also known as the TPMS symbol, this light means that the pressure in one or more tires is either too high or too low. This could be dangerous if you continue to drive without having them checked.

engine temperature

Engine Temperature

This symbol appears when your engine is overheated. It's most often triggered by a low level of engine coolant, but there are several other issues that could cause it to turn on. With that said it's important to have it assessed by a professional if you hope to avoid more serious damage.
